Marvel Eyeing McConaughey To Play Major Spider-Man Villain?

Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey might be being eyed up to play Norman Osborn in Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures’ upcoming ‘Spider-Man’ reboot.

While merely a rumour for now, the report comes just days after McConaughey said he is open to playing a comic book role in the future, and has read Marvel and DC scripts.

The rumour that he might be playing Peter Parker’s nemesis and alter-ego of the Green Goblin comes from The Hashtag Show (THS) - who are hardly a trusted source but did report on two major plot points from 'Avengers: Age of Ultron’ which proved accurate.

In those correct reports (which detailed major spoilers we won’t mention here) THS cited an insider working at Marvel Studios who they say also provided this story.

At this stage the story is only that Marvel and Sony are interested in McConaughey (and why shouldn’t they be, he’s Matthew McConaughey!) so the actor may yet turn down any approach from the studios.

If he did take the role, he would be the third actor to portray the character in the third iteration of the Spider-Man on the big screen. Before him came Willem Dafoe from Tobey Maguire’s tenure and Chris Cooper from Andrew Garfield’s.

More solid rumours have recently said that 18-year-old 'Hugo’ and 'Ender’s Game’ star Asa Butterfield is close to signing on as Marvel’s new Spidey.

Whoever ends up playing him, he is strongly suspected to be making a short appearance in 'Captain America: Civil War’ next year ahead of his first solo outing in 2017.
