Will Netflix’s Daredevil & The Defenders Join Avengers: Infinity War?

Now that Marvel’s ‘Daredevil’ has opened up a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Netflix, rumours are perhaps inevitably surfacing that the Man Without Fear and his future small screen cohorts will be making their way to the big screen down the line.

Recently released on the online streaming service, ‘Daredevil’ is the first of four new Marvel TV shows, set to be followed by ‘AKA Jessica Jones,’ ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘Iron Fist’ - before all four heroes team up Avengers-style in mini-series ‘The Defenders.’

Now, Bleeding Cool report that these very same Defenders are set to join the biggest battle of them all in ‘Avengers: Infinity War Part 2.’

Details, beyond this, are basically non-existent - and, of course, there has been no corroboration of this rumour from Marvel themselves. But given that the two-part ‘Infinity War’ is the major event movie that the MCU has been building toward thus far, it makes sense they’d want to fit in as many iconic characters as possible.

This would also be in-keeping with the ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ comic book story on which the film as expected to be at least partially based, which brought in more or less every Marvel hero you might name (including, naturally, characters from the ‘Fantastic Four’ and ‘X-Men,’ who obviously won’t be appearing in ‘Infinity War’ thanks to 20th Century Fox owning the movie rights to those properties).

The question might also arise as to whether ‘Infinity War’ could feature the characters of TV’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’ as well - and, though BC don’t touch on this, it seems feasible they might (though crossover with the other Marvel show ‘Agent Carter’ would seem less likely, given that’s set in the 1940s).

The new Netflix shows are opening up a very different side of the MCU, focusing on smaller, ‘street-level’ action in a more grounded, darker and - based on ‘Daredevil’ - considerably more violent manner than we’re used to from the movies.

For the most part, the reaction to ‘Daredevil’ has been nigh-on ecstatic, with the subtle, nuanced performances of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson ‘The Kingpin’ Fisk garnering particular praise. It’s almost enough to extinguish all memory of the deeply flawed 2003 movie with Ben Affleck.

Follow-up series ‘AKA Jessica Jones’ (based on Marvel Max comic ‘Alias’) is currently in production with Krysten Ritter (’Breaking Bad’) in the title role, former ‘Doctor Who’ David Tennant as the villainous Purple Man, and Mike Colter as Luke Cage, prior to that character taking centre stage in the next Netflix show.

The casting of the fourth Defender, ‘Iron Fist,’ has yet to be revealed - nor have the broadcast dates for any of the subsequent shows been announced, although ‘AKA Jessica Jones’ is expected to come to Netflix later in 2015.

But even if the Defenders are indeed set to join the fight with Thanos (and company?), that’s still a long way off, as ‘Avengers: Infinity War Part 2′ is not due until May 2019.
