Ron Perlman Still Wants Hellboy 3

Actor Ron Perlman has declared - neither for the first time nor the last, we suspect - that he will keep “fighting” to get the third ‘Hellboy’ movie made.

It’s something a sore spot both for the 64-year old actor and for devoted fans of the supernatural comic book and its two big screen adaptations. Both existing ‘Hellboy’ movies - 2008’s ‘Hellboy II: the Golden Army’ in particular - point toward a truly epic finale in which the demon-turned-hero faces his destiny, as the prophesied bringer of the Apocalypse.

Alas, neither of the ‘Hellboy’ films proved profitable enough for a third film to get the go-ahead, and director Guillermo del Toro has since moved on to other things.

In the years since ‘Hellboy II,’ reports have varied as to the likelihood of a third film getting off the ground - and the longer it goes, the less likely it looks, particularly given how fraught del Toro’s schedule is, not to mention that Perlman obviously isn’t getting any younger.

In a radio interview with DJ Tony Tone (quoted by ComicBook.com), Perlman declares, “I’m fighting for it. Guillermo del Toro kind of wants to do it, but he’s very busy. It’s got to be him, because he’s the guy that created the saga, and the shape of it, and he knows how it’s supposed to end.

"But yeah, I think it’s essential that we end it, because it was meant to be three movies, so I’m fighting for it, but there’s nothing to report right now."

A mainstay through just about all of del Toro’s English language films, Perlman worked with the director again on 2013’s ‘Pacific Rim,’ and is expected to return in its 2017 sequel.

A little worryingly, del Toro has declared he has designs on making ‘Pacific Rim’ a trilogy too; we can but hope it works out this time… and, like Perlman, we can keep crossing our fingers that ‘Hellboy 3’ gains momentum somewhere down the line.
