Star Wars: Warwick Davis Has A Great Idea For The New Films

He made his film debut as an Ewok in ‘Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi’ aged 12, and came back to the franchise 16 years later in ‘Episode I – The Phantom Menace’, but series stalwart Warwick Davis will not be returning for ‘Episode VII’, however he’s got a brilliant idea for the filmmakers of the new trilogy and spin-offs.

He wants to see Pixar-style ‘Star Wars’ shorts before the main feature.

We asked the star whether he thought there could be room for another Ewok spin-off in Disney’s plan for the franchise, a spiritual sequel to ‘Caravan of Courage’ perhaps?

“Well, I don’t know about that,” he tells Yahoo with a grin, “That could be one of the interim films I don’t know.”

“It could be a little short, just before the main feature – an Ewok short. Like Pixar do with the ‘Toy Story’ ones. They could do one with Ewoks, just a two-minute story. I’d do that!”

“I think it should be a fly-on-the-wall documentary about Wicket, forty years on. What’s he up to now?”

“The party’s just finished on Endor and it’s like the clear-up. He’s got screaming kids – the party on Endor was so good, he doesn’t know whose the kids are – ‘I don’t know how this happened!’”

The Ewoks have always proved to be divisive amongst Star Wars fans but we think, done right, an Ewok short before each film would be a fun addition to the franchise.

Despite his close involvement with the brand over the years (he hosted the Star Wars Celebration convention in Germany last year), Davis remains pragmatic about missing out on an ‘Episode VII’ role.

“I haven’t been asked back, but you’ve got to look at it like this,” he explains, “The script has to dictate the need for a character, and then an actor, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t. It’s not a matter of shoehorning people in for the sake of it. I’m excited to see ‘Episode VII’ as a fan, I can’t wait.”

Davis was talking at the Golden Brickies at LEGOLand Windsor, a celebration of LEGO Star Wars fandom which dished out awards for the best fan-made short films, builds, and photos.

LEGO and Star Wars have had a close relationship since 1999 when the franchise became the first intellectual property to be licensed by the Danish toy firm. The movie licensing model, which has seen the firm produce sets based on ‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Harry Potter’, and ‘Indiana Jones’, has been credited as helping turn the Scandinavian firm’s fortunes around.

Davis thinks it’s a complementary arrangement though.

“I think it works both ways for LEGO and for Star Wars. For Star Wars to have a licensee like LEGO, promoting your product, bringing in an audience that enjoy LEGO, who were probably too young for Star Wars first time around, they enjoy the characters now, and are looking forward to the new movies.”
