Val Kilmer Denies He Ignored Tumour Because Of His Religion

Former ‘Batman’ star Val Kilmer has taken to Facebook to address rumours that he’s currently undergoing treatment for a suspected throat tumour.

The actor was reportedly rushed to hospital in LA on Friday after he began “bleeding from the throat” according to US gossip site TMZ, but he refutes the claim that he’s suffering from throat cancer.

The site also claims the actor’s friends are concerned his Christian Science beliefs may be holding him back from surgery or treatment.

Kilmer has spoken publicly about his Christian Science faith in the past on many occasions. Christian Science, a religious sect formed in the 19th century, believes illness is an illusion and that prayer alone is the most effective treatment for physical ailments.

A post on his Facebook page from Saturday reads: “Again, no tumor, no surgery. We are waiting for x ray results and will stay close to my doctors advising, my family and Christian Science practitioner when all the facts are in.”

TMZ followed up its initial story with another claiming that Kilmer is “killing himself by not dealing with a serious tumour… because of his religious beliefs.”

The gossip site says Kilmer has known about the tumour since last summer and has been covering his neck up with scarves when out in public, but has denied himself medical treatment. In October, the actor appeared in a small claims court over a dispute with his former landlord, but he told the judge he was unable to talk due to a “swollen tongue”.

Kilmer took to Facebook again overnight with a post hitting out at USA Today. He says the American newspaper ran a story about his condition that he believes to be false.

“USA TODAY is making a claim that my representative is more correct about the facts of my body than I am.”

"You all know it’s me talking, and you all know if it’s different "facts" in USA TODAY they are not telling the truth because they are trying to sell a story that sells more magazines."

Their story includes a quote from Liz Rosenberg who they claim represents the star, confirming the ‘Top Gun’ star was undergoing tests for a possible tumour and that doctors were “encouraged by his progress”. The report concludes that the medical professionals believe the actor will make a full recovery.

Kilmer, whose most notable roles came in ‘The Doors’, ‘Top Gun’, ‘Willow’, and ‘Batman Forever’, remains in the UCLA intensive care unit being cared for by his two children Mercedes and Jack.
